PSmeow How do you control your urge to splurge?
I'm not sure if it's the WFH situation or what, but my impulse buying trend has gone up , and this doesn't count the things we really need at home (groceries, replacing damaged item, etc). Any tips on how to stick to the budget and keep that impulse in control?
-set a budget in NAV planner, and then before you buy something you know you don't really need, go check your budget tracker first
-have a list of things you need to buy, focus your browsing on those things instead of going to websites/apps randomly for the "let's just see what's on sale cos I'm curious" type of browsing
What I did is turn-off all the notifications of the shopping apps. Notifications pop-up like every minute which these shopping apps purposely do so you will look in the app & shop more. I once uninstall all the shopping apps too and just browse through the website online when I need to buy something.
@Jam07 - That's brilliant. Those emails are useful for essentials and other large items I've been shopping for but keeping the inbox lean is such a good idea. How often do you this and what do you usually unsubscribe from?
@ham adding on to your tips - I "detoxed" my personal mailbox recently and unsubscribed to some mails so that i don't get reminded of all these 20% sale or discounts which actually caused me to buy more things than needed!
(referring to clothes and fashion related items which... do we really need them now considering we don't really head out? )
@PSmeow try detoxing too....
I breakdown my salary into various buckets like necessities, indulgence, investments, savings. So if I were you, I would be “allowed” to buy random things online with my indulgence bucket, provided I keep to the budget allocated. Ultimately, I believe it’s important to know yourself and be committed to sticking to your own budget
Sounds like you're already keeping track of your spending so that's a good first step! I "gamify" my non-essential spending (including bubble tea!) by trying to spend less than the previous month - and reward myself by topping up the budget set aside for special occasions!
Another speed bump you can impose is to delete all the credit cards stored on the online shopping sites, so you can't check out your cart straightaway.
