An insurance plan designed to ease some financial burdens for caregivers of family members with dementia.
Why is it important to have a critical illness insurance plan?
Medical expenses for treatments can be very costly in certain situations. According to the Basic Financial Planning Guide launched by The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), in conjunction with the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS), Association of Financial Advisers (Singapore) (AFAS) and Life Insurance Association (LIA) to help Singaporeans take steps to enhance their financial well-being, it was recommended that each person has standard critical illness coverage of 4 times their annual income. This amount represents the financial needs of household expenses and outstanding debt payments during the period of recovery (Source: 2023 Basic Financial Planning Guide).
While an Integrated Shield Plan and government schemes provide hospitalisation coverage or relief for large hospital bills and selected costly outpatient treatments, such as dialysis and chemotherapy for cancer, not all costs are covered. On top of the potential loss of income during the recovery period, below are some out-of-pocket expenses that may be incurred:
To avoid putting ourselves or our loved ones in difficult financial situations while coping with emotional stress, it is wise to plan ahead for a protected future. A Critical Illness plan typically pays a lump sum in the event of diagnosis covered under the policy. The policyholder can then use the money for any type of expenses.
